Dan Monck

Designer | Material, Front Yard Company, Green Roof Shelters

Dan was born in London in 1956, but raised and schooled in rural Essex. Since the age of sixteen, apart from a brief spell on the north Yorkshire moors, he has lived in London. His working life has been centered around making buildings and furniture, and some theatre. First working as a labourer, Dan worked respectively as a steel fabricator, carpenter, maintenance manager for a community arts theatre, set builder and furniture maker. Uncomfortable with the connotations suggested by ‘architect’ or ‘product designer’, Dan has been searching for an adequate and succinct way to describe what he does. Suggestions are welcome. Norman Potter subtitles his book What is a designer with ‘things, places, messages’. Dan does two of these three: for the last 20 years, he has been a designer of things and places.

For 16 years Duncan Kramer and I have worked together; a wonderful stroke of good fortune. Our joint practice is firmly grounded in making and, what should be at the core for all designers, enabling.

Dan has a diploma in independent study (art and politics of engineering) and a degree in architecture. He lives in Hackney with his partner and two sons.

As well as their ongoing design partnership under the name Material, Duncan and Dan founded the Front Yard Company which is based at 115. Together they also work within the Green Roof Shelter company.

Material is a multidisciplinary design and production group started some 16 years ago by Duncan Kramer and Dan Monck. Our work is designing furniture, exhibitions and buildings, both in whole and in part. At the heart of our ethos is a close affinity with making.

  • Material’s concerns are:
  • •  understanding the client
  • •  ensuring functional needs are met
  • •  achieving elegant and sustainable solutions
  • •  the need for good collaboration between client, designers, and producers.
