Cleo Broda

Artist and lecturer

Biography

Cleo Broda is an artist and lecturer. In another life she studied painting at Glasgow School of Art. She completed her MFA in print/media at the Slade School of Fine Art in 1998.

Recent exhibitions have been the Deceleration Project at Spital Square and Tempered Ground at The Museum of Garden History organised by Danielle Arnaud Contemporary Art. She has exhibited at the Economist Building and as part of New Contemporaries 99. In 2000/1 she was artist in residence at the London School of Economics.

She is currently nearing the completion of a project in Hartcliffe, Bristol commissioned by the Architecture Foundation.

Recent funded research expeditions have taken her to Los Angeles and Ukraine.

Work

Her interests are centred around ways in which people inhabit space. She is interested in how people write themselves into spaces, making their mark and altering their environment. Her research is conducted using the rigorous surveying techniques of loitering, chatting to strangers, knocking on doors and following up any line of enquiry suggested to her. Her observations are often shown in borrowed forms such as maps, diagrams and plans. In her recent research expedition to Ukraine she focussed on investigating small structures such as bus stops, roadside monuments and lifeguard huts.
