Katherine worked in Canada and the US before moving to the UK in 2001 to pursue a research degree and to write more about design. She has a BA in political theory from the University of Toronto, and a BDes in Communication Design from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Katherine has experience in graphic and interface design in the cultural, high-tech and non-profit sectors. Recent clients have included environmental organisations and the dance group Collective(Gulp). She teaches in the Department of Typography at the University of Reading. Her research explores meaning in graphic language, especially in book design and in diagrammatic representation. She is also interested in the role of design in society and in the political dimensions of visual communication. Moved by aspects of English culture since her arrival in London, she has written about English bell-ringing (and patterns) and about the full English breakfast (and diagrams) for Dot Dot Dot magazine. She is also contributing to a forthcoming multimedia performance festival (Ottawa, Canada) as a collaborating artist through her work as designer.
